Christian Thielemann joins London’s Royal Academy

The German conductor has been appointed Carl Maria von Weber Visiting Professor of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music, starting next month. RAM Principal Jonathan Freeman-Attwood said: ‘Christian Thielemann has become a great friend of the Academy, where students and staff regularly speak of his remarkable artistry and the values underpinning it. Thielemann believes fervently in the critical role of great music in our lives; for it to be understood on its own terms, he seeks to transform our experience through his extraordinary grasp of tradition and the way he transforms it for our own times. ‘As the oldest established conservatoire in Britain, it’s fortunate that his Visiting Professorship carries the name of Weber, the first conductor of an Academy orchestra in 1826. This seems especially appropriate given Weber’s importance to both Dresden and Richard Wagner: two of Christian Thielemann’s most celebrated territories. We will always enjoy welcoming him to the Academy.’ Christian Thielemann said: ‘I am truly delighted to be attached to the Academy as a place where I feel very much at home. In my visits, I have always been hugely impressed by the quality of the playing and the seriousness of approach, as well as the unique culture and warmth of the place. I look forward to rekindling these experiences in the future.’
